Finally, we're home
2007-02-26, 10:03 a.m.

Well the move is done... Mostly. We're in, have a few things unpacked, beds made and slept here last night-even Jack slept all night long (it was a loooooong day and he was EXHAUSTED. I think he may have slept on the sidewalk if he had to). Luckily since we did the month-long move, he got the chance to absorb this new place gradually. I was worried a little about his adjustment, but I think he's already mostly fine.

And once again, I am the queen of self-fullfilling prophecies. I had told Nikki over the phone on Friday that everything that could go wrong seems to be doing so for the move. First, my brother was/is having a bad week, healthwise--details to follow in their usual spot. Not that that had anything to do with the move, I just wish I could've had more time to spend with him this weekend (which he doesn't ask for or probably even want most of the time since he's resting) and not had to be distracted with finishing the moving process. Jack started to come down with a fever Friday night, and since I'm told there is a huge flu outbreak going on, I feared the worst there... Luckily, he was fine by Saturday morning. Also an ice storm was scheduled to hit early Sunday morning, just in time for us to do all of the heavy object moving. I really had no hope for success this weekend.

Saturday was pretty much the moving day from hell. It was still just me and Jeff at this point, finishing moving the stuff that would fit in our cars. The first trip went okay, just as far as the loading and unloading went. We set up the computer right away for the main goal of checking our truck reservation which we were planning to pick up later in the afternoon. It took us something like 2 hours just to get the internet up. We were on the phone with the tech support people the whole time and quite frankly, the lady was totally stumped. Finally a service technician got on the line and the connection was made. Then as soon as Jeff got off the phone, our browser crashed and we lost connection again. They actually called US back to see if things were okay, which they weren't and we had to start all over again. Oy.

So once we were finally online, a new type of debaucle ensued involving our moving truck reservation being cancelled, without our knowledge. Here we are, running out of time, two small sedans and no truck. It was a mess that took again, more than an hour to resolve. Helpful hint to all--no rental trucks are available without a standing reservation on the last Saturday of the month--Jeff called 3 different companies. The evening ended with us flooding the kitchen in the old apartment with the dishwasher-don't ask, and my car stalling out twice and giving signs that it might be about to die.

Luckily, Sunday went okay. There's no point in day-logging the details.

So now it's just a matter of cleaning up the old place and gettting settled in here. It already feels more like home than the old apartment ever did. One of the last orders of business last night was to go back to the old place to pick up the car seat and as I was telling Jeff, it already feels like someone else's home. We'd only been out a matter of hours--we're not even fully in our new place yet--and the apartment we've been living in for the past year already feels foreign and like someplace where we don't have any business being. I'm not sad about that at all. Good riddance.

A private entry will follow as soon as I can get to it. I have to go off to work now though, so not today probably.
