Revisiting Rabbit
2010-08-30, 1:32 a.m.

I may have done some editing when I posted the last bits, some time ago, about rabbits as totem animals... Seeing only what I wanted to see and whatnot. Yes, they are associated with luck and fruitfulness and the like, but they are also timid and weak creatures--hunted by all and have few defenses beyond their speed, agility and sheer numbers.

More, from www.crystalinks.com

Rabbit: fear, timidity, nervousness, humility

Rabbit's medicine includes moving through fear, living by one's own wits, receiving hidden teachings and intuitive messages, quick thinking, strengthening intuition, and paradox. Rabbit also represents humility, because he is quiet and soft and not self-asserting. Rabbit reminds us not to be afraid. Fearful thoughts reproduce (like rabbits) and bring the very thing we fear. Rabbit people are so afraid of tragedy, illness, and disaster, that they call those very fears to them to teach them lessons. If you see Rabbit or in any way feel attracted to him, it may be telling you to wait for the forces of the universe to start moving again, to stop worrying and to get rid of your fears. It always indicates a need to re-evaluate the process you are undergoing, to rid yourself of any negative feelings or barriers, and to be more humble.

From www.animaltotem.com:

Rabbit is often connected with fear because they are timid and constantly on guard. Rabbit wants us to learn how to face our fear and know when to defend our space or walk away.

Rabbit shows us that defending ourselves doesn't always involve fighting back. He teaches us to listen carefully to what is going on in our environment so we can accurately use our intuition when in danger.

...and from www.goddessrealm.com:

RABBIT:
The Rabbit is a totem of gentleness, fear and faith. The rabbit is often associated with fear because of the nervous energy it expends. Sensitive with keen observation skills, the rabbit has strong reflexes that help them dash to safety quickly protecting themselves from danger. They can be seen, disappear and reappear in the twinkling of an eye. They are always clear on which direction to go and when. Rabbit people can also move quickly and unpredictably, but may have the tendency to not look before they leap. When Rabbit appears it is enabling you to take advantage of opportunities that may only present themselves for brief period. When the Rabbit shows up it is time to face the fears that hold you back from growing. The Rabbit is guiding you into a mysterious world of spirituality and rebirth, and all that is required is a leap of faith.

I'm not disparaging the new theory that the totem was meant for one or the other of us, rather than for us as a pair, but I think that maybe while it may be different now (as nearly everything has turned out to be), I think when John and I saw our rabbits that they were for both of us. I think that we may have just misunderstood the meaning. Without the willingness to open up, face the fear and look past it, and embrace the new opportunity, we couldn't have had what we had. The opportunity was fleeting and frankly, unsustainable at this point in history. I also think that it was an indication of the hastiness which we had both recognized, and the "not looking before leaping" aspect led us to handling the situation poorly. Yeah... I think we misunderstood Rabbit and what she was trying to tell us.

Now, perhaps, she is just but for one of us, but I have a hard time believing that was the intention from the beginning. I need to look up frog now, but probably won't post it just yet.
